In De Nederlandsche Leeuw 1983, Van der Klooster sets out how Van Leiden, Van Wassenaar and Van Raaphorst sprote from Doede van Voorhout through his son Kerstant. John Ooms gives us at line of descendance. Who do we find if we search the Groesbeek Collectie (GC) and Oorkonden (OHZ)?

NL83

  1. Kerstant Doedensz, drossaart van Holland, attested 1167-1189 (Koch, OHZ, 160,215,217,220), but never Van Raaphorst.

Early tree NL83

NL83 has an early tree that can be extended with Willem van Voorhout, likely son of Dodo and brother of Kerstant

              Dodo van Voorhout
             / \
Kerstant, drost (1) Willem van Voorhout
      / | \ \
Gerard +1161 Philips van Dirk vRaaphorst (2) WWvV
dapifer Wassenaar |
                            Kerstant (3)
                              |
                            Dirk (4)
                              |
                            Kerstant (5)
                              |
                            Dirk (6)

Putting dates to that... it would not be unlikely that Kerstant (1) would have had a son Dodo and a son Kerstant too, that would make 5 boys, and very likel several girls too. His son Gerard had become an adult and succeeded him as drost, but died before his father, likely rather young. If Kerstant was 60 in 1161, born 1101 married early 1122, and produced a 3rd son and 5th child by 1130, then Gerard would have died young, around 30yo. His brother Dirk (2) would have been younger still, 1135-1140, and would have just started his carreer around 1160. Is he is the Dirk 1220, 1227 he was likely born several years later even. Born 1150, he would have been attested 70-77 yo. I haven't spotted the Kerstant (3), who seems to have been spotted in/by Van Gouthoeven. Likely the oldest son, born ca 1175, would have died 63yo in 1238 then. That would make Dirk (4), another oldest son ca 1200 then. Respectable 61-72 you then, and hard to believe he'd be 1289. Kerstant (5), again oldest son, would then be born ca 1225, and he would have been 84 you in 1309. Seems we need to push all of their births a bit further to make that fit better, 1165, 1190, 1220, 1245 looks better.

So that would give guestimates, with deaths soon after last mention:

  • K (1) 1110-1175 (65 yo) v1161
  • D (2) 1140-1227 (87 yo) v1220,1227
  • K (3) 1165-1238 (73 yo) v1238
  • D (4) 1190-1272 (82 yo) v1261-1272
  • K (5) 1220-1309 (89 yo) v1282-1309
  • D (6) 1245

That would leave the 1289 to D6, have to put some others on him as well, I'll reshuffle GC a bit. Kerstant 1316-1323 and in 1346 his children would hardly fit K5, so there likely is another one still.

Fitting in the rest

  • Gerard 1269 would have been of the same generation as Dirk (4). Could have been a grandson of G+1161, but he was never named Raaphorst and that would require a generation in between, easiest to assume either D2 named a son after his brother, who named a son after him self, so cousin of D4, or K3 named a son after his uncle. The latter requires the least postulated people, so that seems prefferable.
  • Gerrit 1295-1325, if al the same person, is unlikely to be the same person as G1269, and seems most in sync with K5. He is named a son of K, likely 5, in 1323. But he could very well be son of a Kerstant?, son of G1269 named after K3, that would also solve the >1309 mentions. Then again, how would they have distinguised both Kerstants in the documents?
                            Kerstant (3) Kerstant (3)
                           / \ / \
                     Dirk (4) Gerard 1269 Dirk (4) Gerard 1269
                        | | |
                    Kerstant (5) Kerstant (5) Kerstant? v1316-1323
                      / \ | |
                Dirk (6) Gerrit v1295-1325 Dirk (6) Gerrit v1295-1325

I think I prefer the variant on the right.

Then, Clare, v1316-1323, a hofstede she possibly lives in, no husband or children. A widow maybe? If she was born 1250, became widow 1316 at 66yo, and died 1323 73yo... she would most likely have been the wife of Kerstant (5), or his cousin.

Hazetiaen Gerardsdr is named her father's heir, seemingly only daughter, in 1324, and is married by 1328. Born before 1300, and by 1324 unlikely any more sons would follow? For now best fits Gerrit v1295-1325, but she might be attested past 1356, haven't looked that far yet.

Gerrit Kerstantsz v1328-1355... is not named Kerstantz everywhere, and it is unlikely al Gerrits v1295-1355 (and possibly later) are the same person. It seems Gerrit Kerstantsz had a son Gerard, and possibly even a grandson Gerard.

D(6), *c1245 maybe a decade later, could have been attested up to 1330 something if he lived to old age, but I can't make that stretch to 1356. Simplest solution would be to have him have a Dirk Dirksz. *c1280 and attested v1328-1356, being 76yo by then.

Hazekine +1322 widow of Kerstant would K(5) best, cause he died >1309, and the presumed Kerstant Gerardsz would have been attested in 1323 still. But Gerrit names a daughter Hazetiaen, so some attestations for Kerstant are likely mixed up.

Florens Gerardsz would be brother of Gerard and Hazetiaen, so would another Wouter and Kerstant be.

Let's draw again...

                            Kerstant (3)
                           / \
                     Dirk (4) Gerard v1269
                     v1261-1272 |
                        | |
                    Kerstant (5) Kerstant? v1316-1323 x
                   v1282-1309 x Hazekine +1322
                  Clare v1316-1323 |
                      / |
             Dirk (6) v1289-1328 Gerrit v1295-1335 x Agnes van Duvenvoorde
                    | / | | | \
Dirk Dz v1338-1356 Gerard v1355 Hazetiaen Florens Kerstant Wouter
         x Agniese v1324-1346 v1332-1355 v1351 v1351
                                             x Alfer v Horst

That has a problem. In 1320 a Gerrit is a widow of a Jutte. He can hardly be Gerard v1269, brother of D(4) that died and old man shortly after 1272. He could be his grandson, but I have him married to AvD. He could have remarried, if he is of similar age as D(6) he could hardly have had a son Simon with her. So we'd need another Gerard then.

Haven't sunk my teeth in ver Agnes van Oudshoorn yet.

John Ooms

  1. Kerstant Doedesz
  2. stamvader Dirk, *1175-+1230
  3. Kerstant, *1200-+1238
  4. Dirk, *1230-+1272
  5. Kerstant, *1260-+1320
  6. Gerard, *1253-+1328, brother of Kerstant above

And Gerard married AvD and had Sophie, Dirk, Alida, Hadewij, Floris, Kerstant, Wouter No Simon, no Clare, no Jutte, no Hazekine. It was Dirk Gerardsz dat was father of another Dirk, Johanna and Bartholomeus, likely the one that appeared with ver Agnes van Oudshoorn.

Let's draw...

                    Kerstant (3)

Dirk(6) NL83, the (6) goes to Gerard here, would be 1280-1350, but who'd ahve been the D +<1311? We do not have a Gerrit Kerstantsz, and this single Gerard has to carry all attestations 1269-1355? A G *1253 could have been attested 1269. G v1328-1355 could have been a grandsons of Gerard then, most likely through Kerstant then. He would have been born 1275ish, and could have carried 1323, and anything after 1328, maybe even up to 1355.
